Our breeding objective is to produce healthy, intelligent and eager to please dogs that look like a Shorthair should and can do what the breed is meant to do. Our blueprint in our design for optimum structure and temperament is the German Shorthaired Pointer Club of America AKC breed "standard." In the opening paragraph it states, “The German Shorthaired Pointer is a versatile hunter, an all-purpose gun dog capable of high performance in field and water. The judgment of Shorthairs in the show ring reflects this basic characteristic. The overall picture which is created, in the observer's eye is that of an aristocratic, well balanced, symmetrical animal with conformation indicating power, endurance and agility and a look of intelligence and animation. Grace of outline, clean cut head, sloping shoulders, deep chest, powerful back, strong quarters, good bone composition, adequate muscle, well carried tail and taut coat produce a look of nobility and indicate a heritage of purposefully conducted breeding. Further evidence of this heritage is movement which is balance, alertly coordinated and without wasted motion.”
We research pedigrees at great length and try to educate ourselves about the ancestors of our dogs. We are very interested in preserving the Gretchenhof/Columbia River line of the past and to that end we use very old frozen semen to insure the continuation of these great dogs. Because of this the Shortale’s German Shorthaired Pointer will typically have more bone with a powerful aristocratic appearance than many of the dogs you see today and powerful ground covering movement to go along with it. We want to have long-lived dogs, and as a result we do the following health tests on our dogs – OFA hips, OFA cardiac, Optigen Cone Degeneration and CERF for eyes. We do our best to ensure a long life in our dogs, but there are still many genetic diseases as in people that we just can’t control.
All Shortales puppies are born and raised in our home. Home raising puppies and giving them dedicated human attention and socialization during these crucial early weeks results in dogs in tune with their owners, who love people and want to be with their people at all times. All puppies have their dew claws removed, tails docked and a micro chip implanted as well as the start to their vaccination program prior to leaving us. All pus are examined by our Veterinarian for health and a stool samples checked to be sure no worms are present.
